Who says you can’t be a nurse and CrossFit athlete at the same time? Well, certainly not Lauren Herrera, the fourth fittest nurse in the world in 2018. Are you interested in knowing more about her? Then, continue reading to know who Lauren Herrera really is.
Life Before CrossFit
Similar to other CrossFit athletes, Lauren Herrera also has a background in sports. She used to play volleyball, soccer, track, and flag football. Moreover, Lauren was quite an active person.
These activities eventually led to a globo gym membership right after she graduated from college. Lauren has a bachelors’ degree in Exercise Science & Health Promotion as well as a nursing degree.
Lauren and CrossFit
She got into CrossFit in 2011 because of her husband, who was still her boyfriend at that time. Her husband was introduced to the sport while at the base in Afghanistan. When he returned home, he brought Lauren to a local gym.
When the couple went to a gym together for the first time, Lauren thought they were joining an Orange Theory class. At that time, Lauren had no idea what CrossFit was all about. She was even apprehensive about picking up a barbell at the start.
All these apprehensions soon disappeared and she fell in love with the sport.
Lauren felt that she accomplished something each time she left the gym. While her husband paid for her first month, she continued the membership after the initial month.
CrossFit Competitions
Lauren Herrera joined her first open competition in 2012. Since her husband was redeployed to Afghanistan, she focused on working and training.
Even though she didn’t qualify for the regionals in 2012 and 2013, she continued to work hard with the goal of entering the regional competitions in 2014.
Her hard work paid off in 2014 and she qualified for the South East Regionals. She finished 6th overall in the women’s individual category. It was a memorable year for her since it was also the year when her husband proposed to her.
In 2015, Lauren qualified once again for the Atlantic Regional competitions. While she finished 11th overall, it was comparable to her 2014 finish since the number of regions was trimmed down to eight from 17. Due to this, there were more athletes competing at the regional level.
Lauren the Coach
In addition to qualifying for the regionals and getting the proposal, 2014 was also the year when Lauren and her husband operated their own CrossFit box.
The schedule was hectic for her since she had to coach and train in the morning. The same thing happened after lunch. Due to this, Lauren set up a couch and air conditioning in one part of the gym so she can take a short nap in between her morning and afternoon sessions.
While she loved coaching, the schedule was quite frenetic so the couple decided to slowly let other people handle the gym. This resulted in people starting to leave the gym since they felt attached to the couple when they were running the gym. In the end, Lauren and her husband eventually closed the gym.
Lauren and Hustle Hard CrossFit
In 2016, Lauren joined Hustle Hard CrossFit while studying to become a nurse. The team finished 2nd overall in the Atlantic Regionals. This was also Lauren’s ticket to her first CrossFit Games appearance.
Even though the team finished 22nd overall, it was a great experience for Lauren who was finally able to compete in the CrossFit Games. The team qualified for the next two editions of the CrossFit Games.
CrossFit Issue
In 2019, Lauren’s CrossFit campaign hit a snag when she tested positive for a banned substance while competing at the Mid-Atlantic CrossFit Challenge. As a result, Lauren was suspended from competing in CrossFit events for four years.
The issue may have put her plans on hold, but it allowed her to focus on something she was already thinking about before the 2019 season started, starting a family with her husband.
Life as a Nurse
Even though Lauren is not allowed to compete in CrossFit events until April 2023, she still keeps in shape. She is also focusing on her work as a PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit) nurse.
Since CrossFit took up most of her time, she was initially unsure if being a nurse was something she would be happy with. But, all of her fears went away after she became a nurse.
Becoming a nurse allowed her to find a perfect balance for her life. It also allowed her to have a means of achieving her ultimate goal of helping others. Since she is a PICU nurse, she deals mainly with newborn babies up to 17-year olds.
Lauren finds her job fulfilling since she is able to help children progress in the right direction in terms of their health and eventually get better.
