Life Before CrossFit
Like many other successful female CrossFit athletes, Chantelle Loehner was a competitive gymnast who was at the top of her game since high school. She was a level 10 gymnast for two years while she was at Crystal Lakes Gymnastics Training Center. Chantelle was also a regional qualifier for three years.
She did not limit her achievements to gymnastics since she was also a member of the track and field varsity team. In fact, she set the record in 2007 for the triple jump in the Fox Valley Conference.
College Achievements
After high school, she focused on gymnastics and was a division 1 athlete while studying at Eastern Michigan University. In 2011, Chantelle represented EMU in eight competitions and recorded 9.625 on the vault during the CMU Quad Meet. Her floor exercise score of 9.550 also allowed her alma mater to beat the Air Force Academy in another competition.
While she did not compete in 2012, Chantelle went back to her winning way in 2013. She scored a career-high on the floor at the Eagle Invitational at 9.825. The season also had her scoring at least 9.725 in six routines, which helped her earn an honourable mention in the Academic All-MAC team.
In 2014, Chantelle joined in all floor competitions for EMU. She scored at least 9.700 in most of her events. The season also saw her winning three floor titles on her way to becoming a part of the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches for Women (NACGC/W) Scholastic All-America team
Chantelle and CrossFit
After graduating from college, Chantelle felt a void that she needed to fill. Her competitive spirit did not allow her to simply rest on her laurels and focus on doing social work. Chantelle graduated with a master’s degree in Social Work.
Then, she discovered CrossFit. Chantelle was engrossed by the holistic approach of the sport, which incorporates endurance and strength training. The competitive nature of the sport also fascinated Chantelle who took to CrossFit like a duck to water.
Chantelle’s love for the sport increased and she found herself spending more time in the gym. Since she was already a gymnast, her training focused mainly on enhancing her strength. Chantelle noted that she was able to muscle up quickly.
Competing in CrossFit
While most CrossFit athletes train for some time before they join competitions, it was different for Chantelle. She started competing a few months after she joined the sport. To prepare for the competition, she joined a group of high-level athletes in her gym who were training for the regionals.
The training was challenging at the start, but she reaped the rewards after. Training for four to five months, Chantelle joined the regional competitions as part of the Plymouth CrossFit team. Even though the team finished 15th overall, it was a good experience for Chantelle.
In her second year, Chantelle opted to compete as an individual. Her 31st place finish in the open competition allowed her to qualify for the regionals. Additionally, she also competed in CrossFit events in Dubai and the Granite Games.
Controversy and Failed Drug Test
In 2019, Chantelle’s goal of competing in the CrossFit Games hit a snag. She revealed in May that a drug test during the Mid-Atlantic CrossFit Challenge had a positive result for a banned substance. She was notified of the result through email. Chantelle was devastated and shocked since she would never knowingly take PEDs or performance-enhancing drugs.
Due to this, she asked for a test on her sample B. Chantelle hoped the initial result was a mistake. She said she will never intentionally endanger the integrity of the sport. Moreover, she will never risk disappointing her team, coaches, family, and friends.
However, sample B also tested positive for the banned substance found in the first test. As a result, Chantelle was suspended from participating in CrossFit competitions for at least four years. Aside from being disqualified from the 2019 CrossFit Games, her score in the CrossFit Open was also invalidated.
