A doctor by profession, Trevor Bachmeyer figured prominently in the Master’s division of the Open competitions. He has gone through a lot in his CrossFit journey, including a major setback in the 2017 Open when he received a suspension for cheating.

Life Before CrossFit
Before Trevor Bachmeyer entered the world of CrossFit, he was already into sports. He played hockey and soccer when he was young. When he graduated high school, he was sinewy but athletic.
Since he was only around 130 lbs. when he graduated high school, he decided to work out at the local gym. Trevor went into bodybuilding and even joined some shows. While he respected bodybuilders due to the work they put into the sport, he didn’t continue since he felt it did not contribute to his health.
He went into explosive functional training for fun. It was at this point when he discovered CrossFit.
Trevor Bachmeyer and CrossFit
The first CrossFit workout Trevor witnessed were pull-ups where the athletes were swinging over the bars. He felt his shoulders hurting by simply watching it. But, he was amazed that they can finish 40 pull-ups in a minute.
The first workout of Trevor was Helen. He started with the three-round 400-meter run and then the kettlebell swings before ending it with the pull-ups. While he was dead last, he saw that everyone was cheering him on.
This made him fall in love with CrossFit.
He also started Smash Werx to help people overcome acute and chronic pain through better mobility and exercise techniques. He gives free advice on mobility, injury prevention, and pain management through the company.
Trevor Bachmeyer and Cancer
In 2006, a doctor told him he only had nine months to live since he had Stage 3B Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. His white and red blood cell counts were so low that they couldn’t perform chemotherapy on him. The doctor advised him to do anything he wants to do.
While it was initially terrifying, Trevor didn’t accept what the doctor told him. Instead, he went through chemotherapy and lost 45 to 50 pounds. At one point, he already looked pale and was using a cane to walk.
One day, he asked his doctor if he wanted his son to go through what he was going through. When the doctor said no, he decided to leave and did not go back.
When everybody asked him how he was able to beat cancer, he said he did not own the disease. Instead, he focused on positivity and worked on making himself better.
2017 Open Competition
In the 2017 Open Competition, the 17.3 video Trevor sent in was flagged by a CrossFit judge. Due to this, additional videos were requested from him. After reviewing the 17.5 video Trevor sent, a judge determined that only a single round was performed.
The judge also determined that the video was looped to show the exercise was being performed 10 times. This discovery was supported by the video department of CrossFit HQ.
This resulted in the invalidation of all Open scores of Trevor and he was banned from competing in any CrossFit-sanctioned events for four years.
People had mixed reactions about the suspension. Some were critical of what happened while others told people to focus on the mobility videos he created.
Many of Trevor’s followers on social media encouraged him to clear his name. Trevor owned up to the lapse in judgment. He said he embarrassed himself, his family, and his friends. He also said the four-year ban handed down by CrossFit HQ was a justified and fair punishment.
When he was asked why he submitted the looped video, Trevor said he didn’t have time to redo it. While he performed the exercise, he was already tired from work. After submitting it, he was remorseful and knew it was wrong.
Trevor is hoping that what happened will also prevent anyone from doing what he did. He was not proud of what he did and apologize to everyone he disappointed.
Moving forward, Trevor will continue providing the same material he provided through his Instagram account and website. He added that he will also continue his mission of helping others. While it will be difficult to win the trust of the community back, he will do what it takes to do it.

CrossFit Games Results
While Trevor Bachmeyer has yet to qualify for the CrossFit Games, he topped the Open in Master’s Men (40 to 44) division in the United States in 2016. His scores also ranked him second in the same division worldwide.
Although he qualified for the California Regional in the same year, he did not compete. Due to being a no-show, he was ranked 99th in the field.
The following year, his Open scores were invalidated after it was determined that he only performed a single round instead of 10. The video was looped to make it appear that he repeated the round 10 times.
Training Tips from Trevor Bachmeyer
Despite the setback in 2017, Trevor Bachmeyer still has a good following on social media. This is mainly due to the videos he posts on his Instagram account giving advice on how to alleviate pain, prevent injury, and enhance mobility.
Even though he hasn’t competed in CrossFit for a couple of years, he still has some tips for people looking to improve the quality of their lives. Check out the tips below:
#1: Focus on Positivity
After his father passed away, Trevor Bachmeyer focused on the positive things in life. This realization came after it dawned on him that he will not be seeing his father again. While he may encounter setbacks, he treats every single day as the best day of his life.
He celebrates small victories every day rather than defeats.
For Trevor, if you eat, smell, taste, and wake up every day, it’s something to be thankful for. He wants to focus on positivity. But, this doesn’t happen overnight and requires discipline to have this mindset.
#2: Look Forward
Focusing on the positive things in life means that you have to look forward. Even as you encounter problems, you should not dwell on these defeats. Instead, you should focus on what lies ahead and use what you learned to bring success to your life.
Trevor compared this outlook on the windshield of a car. For him, the windshield is huge and allows you to see what’s ahead. On the other hand, the rearview mirror is small and lets you see what is behind you.
With this, you should direct your effort on what lies ahead. He considers the biggest mistake you can have in your life is when you dwell on your past.
#3: Don’t Set Your Goals Based on the Opinion of Others
Another tip Trevor Bachmeyer has for athletes is for you to avoid setting your goals based on what others think. Instead, you should focus on your abilities and what you can do.
You should avoid doing things that you’re not good at. Focus on what you can do best. You should avoid competing with others, and simply dominate in the things you’re good at.
He adds that you make a wonderful you and make a horrible somebody else.
#4: Life Happens Because of You
For Trevor, you determine what will happen to your life. Life doesn’t happen because of what somebody else did. It happens because of what you did or did not do.
For instance, he reached his peak performance when he was in his forties. At this point, he was able to dominate the CrossFit Open in 2016. He was able to work better and smarter.
Simply put, you make life happen for you.
#5: People are Unique
No one size fits all in life. Whatever works for one person may not work for you. Similarly, something that is good for you may not be good for somebody else.
#6: Be Genuine
Trevor considers being a genuine person as the biggest thing people lack. So, you should be yourself. He says he is the same everywhere in all aspects of his life.
He only wears one hat and is genuine whether it’s at work or at home. He does not have different faces when he’s in front of different people.
Trevor Bachmeyer’s Diet
While Trevor Bachmeyer follows a modified Zone Diet, he thinks genetics plays a major part in your diet. He does not believe in the “no-carbs-after-six or keto diets. He also does not fast.
Moreover, Trevor does not believe in cheat meals. If he wants a donut, he will have a donut. Even though he does not count macros and other stuff other people monitor, he still functions well.
For his meals, he needs to have some greens, carbs, and meat. Trevor normally eats every two hours and up to 4,000 calories each day.
Despite this huge food intake, he still weighs 185 pounds and has very little body fat.
