Nike Metcon DSX Flyknit 2 Review: The Right CrossFit Shoe for You?

Do you know what happens when you climb the rope with a running shoe? I learned it first-hand, so I should warn you, do not do it because you run out of your sneaker in a heartbeat! For CrossFit, a CrossFit sneaker, for running, a running shoe. Logical truth? Now I can see it clearly after I had to throw away my precious running shoes.

Well, we have good news. From December 1st, we have the option to buy the new Metcon DSX FlyKnit model.

This shoe is lighter than the Metcon Series and still as strong as we need for our most vigorous exercises for shoes, such as climbing the rope.

Nike Metcon DSX Flyknit 2: As Seen on Mat Fraser

If you follow Mat Fraser on Instagram, a few weeks ago you must have seen that he showed us the shoe for a moment. He visited Nike and wanted to give us that image. It was only for a moment to put the honey on our lips, and we began to dream about the new model of the shoe.

Nike Metcon DSX Flyknit 2: Even Better than the Previous Version

It seems that when we have a CrossFit sneaker or CrossFit clothes with which we feel super comfortable, we can not imagine how it could be that they release a model that is still better than the current one. Well, every year we have new surprises, and this year we have double the amount.

The same happens with other accessories such as gloves and streetwear, or backpacks, every year they take out new models that offer improvements over the previous ones, and each one feels comfortable with the one he owns or researches to get the one that best suits his needs.

Is it Worth Buying a Crossfit Sneaker?

The answer is yes. Although it can represent a higher bag, we must bear in mind that a Crossfit shoe is prepared to resist specific situations in this sport that other shoes cannot stand. I still remember my first time with Crossfit climbing a rope, and when I went down, I destroyed the side of the shoe.

When choosing a shoe to make CrossFit, we like to know in advance the virtues of that possible shoe to make sure we make a good purchase. Well have no worries, these are the characteristics of your Crossfit shoes.

Nike Metcon DSX Flyknit Characteristics

You already know that the new Metcon shoe is the latest model for CrossFit. It is the latest model of the Metcon saga and if you have used any of the previous models, then you must know the shoe very well, but it also has these improvements:

Sturdy and durable

Your material has been reinforced to prevent it from getting punctured. Basically because of the wear of the material with exercises as aggressive for the shoe as the rope climb or wall climb.

Stable heel

To do the weight lifting, we need some rigidity and stability. Without appearing that you can not move from the hard ones that are some shoes, or as cushioned as those of running, the stiffness point is the perfect one for your weight lifting and whatever you put in front of us in the track.

Flexible tip

To jump the box, to run, for the double unders or the triples!!! The midsole that it wears is more flexible than the heel precisely to make us comfortable for these exercises.

Heel clip

That piece that takes in the back part so that the shoe slides easily in wall exercises. So the shoe does not rub with a bigger surface that makes us go slower or offer more uncomfortable exercise.

The new shoe model is designed so that we can be as efficient as possible in the training sessions in which cardio is the basis.

FlyKnit Technology

FlyKnit technology is what is used in running shoes, a tight fit like a sock, to have the feeling that you are not wearing anything.

Key Features

These characteristics were coupled with the needs of a training shoe for CrossFit.

  • Its fabric is super breathable.
  • They have eliminated the tongue. The upper part has the minimum seams, offering greater comfort. This means that the laces have no function other than aesthetic because the shoe enters like a sock.
  • Use the Flywire cables as stabilizers for the shoes. Thus they offer the subjection that is needed for the intense activities.
  • Maintains the reinforcement of the material on the inner side of the shoe, so you do not suffer accidents by climbing the rope.
  • The foam on the sole offers cushioning for comfort.
  • The shoe is higher in the heel part and has more padded reinforcement.
  • The heel clip protects against friction in exercises like the handstand push up.
  • The heel is a signature to provide stability.
  • As a fun fact, a matter of relevance above all for those of us who are aware of the environment. In each pair of Flyknit shoes, the equivalent of six recycled plastic bottles is used, which drastically reduces the enormous amounts of materials deposited in landfills.

If the shoe is right and also does not generate more waste, double benefit.

Nike Metcon DSX Flywire 2 Cons

There are a few negatives that you should be aware of before buying these shoes. They include the following:

  • Very expensive
  • Stiff shoes that require a break-in period (for a quicker break-in period, consider the Nike Flex Trainers)
  • Some reports that the heel slips around a little bit in them, particularly for people with narrower feet
  • Heel is obviously built for lifting weights and not absorbing shock like when sprinting
  • Doesn’t provide a lot of support compared to other CrossFit sneakers for lateral movements

What do People Think About Them?

—>Read More Customer Ratings and Reviews Here<—

“I decided to give these a try after using Nobulls which were great for lifting but not for running or jumping, basically all the other stuff that you’d encounter during a CrossFit workout. I’m super happy with them. Still great for the weights, but a bit more flexible for cardio or box jumps.”

“Nice and comfy, especially for lifting and rope climbing. So far, durable as well after a few months with them now.”

“Maybe my all-time favourite pair of CrossFit shoes, far better than the Reebok Nanos that I’d previously been using. Also prefer this to the Nike Metcon 4. Seriously, it’s probably the best pair of cross-trainers that I’ve ever had on my feet!”

Aesthetics of the Metcon DSX Flyknit 2 training shoes

This is the part of the review that goes beyond the functionality and is subjective, but I find it interesting to review it since there is no way to look at the shoe without seeing its aesthetics.

When they launched the Metcon DSX 1, the tones they used were sober and elegant. For tastes, as they say, colors, but I have been entirely bought with the line of white, black and gray tones. It seems to be a success and that they also fit well with everything you have.

Surely in a few weeks, we will see more colorful versions of Metcon. In fact for the boys it is in three tones:

  • black and white
  • Red
  • black

The truth is that I do not know why girls only have one color at the moment. At least I’m lucky the version we have is my favorite.

Is the Metcon DSX FlyKnit Ideal for CrossFit?

If you take a look around your gym or ask your trainer, you’ll probably notice a huge variety of shoes on people’s feet. You can find everything from barefoot or minimal shoes to lifting shoes.

Of course, most people wear something kind of in the middle, either CrossFit shoes, or cross trainers like these ones we’ve just reviewed. You might encounter just about anything during a WOD, from running to jumping to lifting and climbing over things. You’ll want a shoe that’s up to the challenge and this one certainly does the trick.

If you want to see some of our other top picks, you can check out the following comparison chart:

What about for Running?

If you’re looking for a pair of shoes to run your next marathon in, these probably aren’t it. Running shoes have a much higher heel toe differential (10+ mm) instead of 6 mm. They are also lighter, and have more cushioning and bounce-back. Plus, they have almost no lateral cushioning, since they’re designed only for movement in a forward motion.

Of course, they can handle some cardio, a light jog for warm-up, or sprints during a workout easily. However, they’re not designed for anything more than a few minutes and will likely be a little bit uncomfortable.

If you’re looking for a pair of running shoes, you can see some of our top choices here: The Best Shock-Absorbing Running Shoes.

Or, if you want to stick with Nike shoes, then you’ll want to consider the Nike Revolution.

Can I Use the Metcon DSX Flyknit 2 for Weightlifting?

If you want a pair of shoes for powerlifting or bodybuilding, then you may want to know if these ones are right for you. They are stable, supportive and can definitely do well if you want to lift some weights.

However, they’re more of an all-round shoe and not specifically for this kind of activity.

The best lifting shoes have almost no heel toe drop, and a strap across the midfoot for extra support. Plus, they’re sturdier and can give you a lot more stability.

Will the Nike Metcon DSX Flywire work for you? It won’t be terrible, but there are certainly better options if your main activity is lifting weights.

Here are some of our top choices for lifting shoes: The Best Powerlifting Shoes. Or, check out this handy comparison chart below:

Nike Metcon DSX Flywire vs the Nike Metcon 4

If you’re looking at CrossFit shoes and want to stick with Nike, then these two options will certainly be at the top of your list. But, which one is right for you? Let’s look at how these two shoes differ.

Fit

The DSX has a bootie like fit, while the Metcon 4 has a regular tongue and collar lacing system. What you prefer really depends on your preference.

Either way, heel slippage is indeed a bit of a problem and despite the different fit style, Nike doesn’t appear to have solved the problem.

metcon-4-nike

Heel to Toe Drop

The Metcon 4 has a heel toe differential of 4 mm, while the DSX is a bit higher at 6 mm. Technically, this means that the Metcon 4 should be a bit better at lifting, while the DSX might do a bit better at sprints.  In reality, they’re not actually that much different from each other in terms of this.

However, neither are a true weightliftings shoe, nor are they ideal for runners. But, they both do pretty well at a wide range of activities.

Metcon 4 vs DSX Flyknit

In reality, both of these are nice all-round shoes that perform well under a wide variety of situations. Some sprints or cardio? No problem? Lifting some serious weight? That’s what they’re made for. Box jumps, wall-handstands or rope climbs? Sure.

If you need a pair of shoes for any sort of indoor workout, you’ll probably love either of these options.
